Workshop Description

Grains, pulses, oilseeds, pseudocereals… these crops have formed the basis of most agricultural systems the world over and account for the majority of of our calories, yet they seldom have a place in our homestead garden. Join a farmer intent on rebuilding our local grain supply for a presentation on the top crops you can grow in your yard, and how to go about harvesting and processing them.

Born and raised in the Cowichan Valley, Foster planted his first pack of grains – courtesy of Salt Spring Seeds – more than a decade ago. Following an agriculture degree at UBC he has been vegetable farming for the past four years. Grains, however, have always had his heart and an ample corner of whatever field he’s been growing in.
